The Free Man

He gave his life for freedom
Not in the flash of a muzzle
Not by any sacrificial bleeding
He was lost in a puzzle.

Friends exiled, enemies glorified
Family vilified, mentors ostracized
He thwarted the advances of fellowship
With a minefield of vitriol

He can't be bothered with towing a line
Or throwing a rope, or pouring the wine
No, he's no trained monkey on a leash
He's a free man, free beyond reach!

He's so free he can't be seen!
He's a black hole, down a rabbit hole
Or the manhole in a street scene
He's so whole, he's downright mean...

He paid so dearly for freedom
Little could he have known
That sometimes a little captivity
Can ease the drag of the stone.
