Bacchanal (1994-95)

For Big Band. Commissioned by Andrew Bishop and premiered by the University of Michigan Jazz Composers Orchestra on April 6, 1996 under the direction of the composer. Composed in Greenville, NC, at the MacDowell Colony in Peterborough, NH and in Ann Arbor, MI.

Program notes:

Bacchanal is a 5-minute work for Jazz Big Band with a unique instrumentation: Flute/Piccolo, Bass Clarinet, Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Baritone Saxes, 2 Trumpets, 2 Trombones, Piano, 2 Percussionists and Drumset, Electric Guitar and Electric Bass. It is rollicking, multi-sectioned composition with a great deal of rhythmic and harmonic complexity moderated by a freewheeling lightness that draws from salsa, rock, and the wonderful 70's Big Band Jazz of people like Rob McConnell and Don Ellis.
